..
The first book we're reading is Panther in the Basement by Amos Oz. Then on (date of film) writer/director Lynn Roth will bring her film adaptation called, The Little Traitor, to Sinai to discuss the process of transforming the book into a screenplay and getting it made in Israel. The film, which stars Alfred Molina, opened this year’s LA Jewish Film Festival and won the audience award at that festival as well as the Palm Beach International Film Festival.

Set in 1947 Jerusalem, Oz's delightful story describes the doings of a twelve-year-old boy in the last year of British control in Israel. As second-in-command of a make-believe underground unit fighting the British domination of Palestine, Proffy is willing to make heroic sacrifices in the struggle to create a Jewish state. The trouble is that he also develops a friendship with a rather shy, gentle British soldier interested in learning Hebrew. When this friendship is discovered his comrades accuse him of treason "because you love the enemy....Loving the enemy, Proffy, is worse than betraying secrets....[It] is the height of treachery." This novel deals with concepts of friendship, betrayal, and the meaning of loyalty and is filled with marvelous wordplay that makes us stop and consider the meaning of the words themselves.
